Art History (B.A.)

As per PRP3604: All students earning a first baccalaureate degree will take at least 30 of their last 45 credits at Bloomsburg University, no more credits are required than the 30 credits. All first baccalaureate students will take at least 50% of credits required for the Major from a PASSHE university. Bloomsburg University may require up to a maximum of 50% of the Major credits. Program exceptions to the policy are to be approved by the Office of the Chancellor.

Students must fulfill the requirements for the major, the general education courses and whatever free elective credits remain to bring the number of semester hours to 120. Attention transfer students: of the thirteen courses needed for the major, at least seven must be taken at Bloomsburg. All art courses at Bloomsburg are three semester hours unless indicated otherwise.

Requirements for Art History

A total of 39 semester hours is required for a major in art history. The degree program in art history provides an overview of the history of art together with minimum competency in a foreign language pertinent to the discipline, as well as direct experience of the art-making process through studio courses. Art history majors are expected to work closely with their adviser to identify courses that are most relevant to their interests and postgraduate goals.

Language

Six semester hours in a foreign language. Art history majors intending to continue studies at the graduate level should take two levels of the same language to acquire greater proficiency. (6 credits)

Art Studio

Six semester hours in art studio courses in areas such as drawing, painting, sculpture, 2D or 3D design, ceramics, fabric design, graphics, photography, printmaking and digital media. (6 credits)

Art electives

Three semester hours in an elective art class (art history or art studio). (3 credits)

General Education and Free Electives:

The remaining credits must fulfill MyCore general education requirements and free electives. Three semester hours must be MUSIC, THEATRE, or DANCE prefix courses.
