73.501 Articulation and Phonological Disorders in Children (3) - This course examines phonetic and language-based disorders of articulation/phonology. Emphasis is placed on the identification, description and remediation of phonological disorders. Phonological process and distinctive feature based systems of analysis will be presented along with traditional and dynamic assessment procedures. Interventions will include traditional phonetic approaches, language-based, constructivistic and other cognitive approaches. The impact of phonological disorders on academics and the development of IEP goals and objectives will be discussed. Prerequisites: Admission into Graduate Program.
73.502 Language Disorders in the School Setting (3) - This course helps prepare speech-language pathologists to evaluate and manage communication disorders in school-age children in collaboration with families, educators, and other related service providers. The course will facilitate student application of research to practice, development and evaluation of program practices, and implementation of appropriate practices for school-age children to enhance communication development. Prerequisites: Admission into Graduate Program.
73.503 Research in Educational Speech Language Pathology (2) - The course will equip the student to apply clinical and non-clinical research literature to the solution of diagnostic and treatment problems encountered in the general practice of Speech Language Pathology. The course will focus on research methods and statistical analysis. Prerequisites: Admission into Graduate Program.
73.504 Diagnostics (1) - This course provides a knowledge base for the assessment and differential diagnosis of speech and language disorders. It focuses on principles of testing and assessments. In particular, emphasis is placed on the psychometric aspects of testing. Prerequisites: Admission into Graduate Program.
73.505 Preschool Language Disorders (3) - This course helps prepare speech-language pathologists to evaluate and manage developmental communication disorders in preschool children in collaboration with families, educators, and other related service providers. The course will facilitate student application of research to practice, development and evaluation of program practices, and implementation of appropriate practices for young children to enhance communication development. Prerequisites: Admission into Graduate Program.
73.506 Professional Issues 1 (1) - The course equips the school-based speech-language pathologists to implement the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. The course covers multiple facets of the law including disabilities covered by IDEA, the evaluation process, development of an Individualized Education Plan, progress monitoring, transition, mediation and due process. Prerequisites: Admission into Graduate Program.
73.507 Language for Literacy Development (3) - The course will equip the student to identify language deficits that can interfere with a child’s ability to develop literacy skills. The concept of literacy will be described along with the development of literacy across the age span. Students will learn diagnostic and assessment strategies appropriate for the assessment of phonological awareness, text comprehension and vocabulary. Intervention strategies for remediating identified deficits will be shared. The role of the speech-language pathologist in the prevention and treatment of literacy deficits will be the focus of the course. Prerequisites: Admission into Graduate Program.
73.508 Professional Issues 2 (1) - This course examines the fundamentals of behavioral and cognitive theory. Emphasis will be placed upon application in school settings and associated with the delivery of services to speech-language disordered clients. Prerequisites: Admission into Graduate Program.
73.509 Communication Disorders of English Language Learners (3) - The course is designed to equip students with the skills necessary to properly evaluate and treat the communication disorders of children from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds including those acquiring English as a second language. Course content will address concepts and principles related to speech-language service delivery while highlighting issues specific to different races, ethnicities and cultures. Issues related to the acquisition of a second language with specific speech-language behaviors that may masquerade as communication deficits will be discussed. Federal provisions for providing services to such children will be discussed along with strategies for promoting family involvement while maintaining cultural sensitivity. Prerequisites: Admission into Graduate Program.
73.510 Fluency Disorders in Children (3) - The course will cover the development, diagnosis and treatment of fluency disorders including stuttering, cluttering and neurogenic, psychogenic, and language based disfluencies. Emphasis is placed on stuttering assessment and intervention in children. Prerequisites: Admission into Graduate Program.
73.511 Communication Disorders of Low Incidence Populations (3) - This course covers disorders of voice, traumatic brain injury and dysphagia for the school setting. The course is grounded in anatomy and physiology. Evidence-based practices for the evaluation, assessment and treatment of these disorders within the school context are emphasized. Prerequisites: Admission into Graduate Program.
73.512 Communication Disorders of Moderate/Severe Populations (4) - This course provides a knowledge base for the nature of language, speech, cognitive, motor and communication disorders and differences observed in children and adolescents with moderate to severe disabilities. Specifically the course addresses the unique assessment and intervention needs of this population and the role of augmentative and alternative communication modalities. The course takes a functional communication approach with an emphasis on the communication needs across the developmental span. The role of language in literacy acquisition and cultural-linguistic differences are infused. Prerequisites: Admission into Graduate Program.
73.513 Professional Issues 3 (1) - This course covers service delivery models appropriate for use in the school setting by speech-language pathologists. Individual and group models of service delivery are discussed with emphasis placed in models that occur in the least restrictive environment. Consultation, collaboration and co-teaching models also are discussed with strategies for effective implementation by the speech-language pathologist. Prerequisites: Admission into Graduate Program.
73.514 Communication Disorders of Hearing Impaired Children (2) - The course will equip the student to provide speech and language intervention to the hearing impaired child. Content will cover types and degrees of hearing loss and their speech, language and educational implications. Amplification systems will be discussed along with classroom modifications. Specific assessment and intervention strategies appropriate for the educational environment will be explained. Roles of various personnel working with hearing impaired children will be identified. Prerequisites: Admission into Graduate Program.
73.515 Communication Disorders of ASD (3) - This course provides a knowledge base for the nature of language, cognitive and communication disorders and differences observed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) required for effective evaluation and treatment of speech-language disorders. Specifically the course addresses diagnosis, etiologies and language characteristics of this population from birth through age 21 as directed by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. The course takes a functional communication approach. The role of language in literacy acquisition and cultural-linguistic differences are infused. Prerequisites: Admission into Graduate Program.
73.521 Practical Experience 1 (1) - This first practical experience prepares students in all aspects of clinical management to serve students with communication and swallowing disorders in the school setting. Students acquire necessary knowledge and skills in preparation for their student teaching experience. Prerequisites: Admission into Graduate Program.
73.522 Student Teaching (4) - The student teaching experience allows students to apply information and concepts learned regarding the clinical management of students with communication and swallowing disorders in the school setting. This is the culminating practical experience of the graduate program in school-based speech-language pathology. Prerequisites: Have passed 5 credits of 73.521.
