Air Force ROTC (61)

61.101 Foundations of The USAF I (Fall) (1) - This survey course briefly covers topics relating to the Air Force and defense. It focuses on the structure and missions of Air Force organizations, officer ship and professionalism. It is also a good introduction into the use of communication skills. One hour lecture per week.

61.102 Foundations of The USAF II (Spring) (1) - This survey course briefly covers topics relating to the Air Force and defense. It focuses on the structure and missions of Air Force organizations, officer ship and professionalism. It is also a good introduction into the use of communication skills. One hour lecture per week.

61.103 Leadership Laboratory I (Fall) (0) - This course (to be taken in conjunction with AS 101 and 102) is a weekly laboratory that touches on the topics of Air Force customs and courtesies, health and physical fitness, and drill and ceremonies.

61.104 Leadership Laboratory II – (Spring) (0) - This course (to be taken in conjunction with AS 101 and 102) is a weekly laboratory that touches on the topics of Air Force customs and courtesies, health and physical fitness, and drill and ceremonies.

61.201 Evolution of USAF Air and Space Power I (Fall) (1) - This survey course is concerned with the beginnings of manned flight and the development of aerospace power in the United States, including the employment of air power in WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War and the peaceful employment of U.S. air power in civic actions, scientific missions and support of space exploration. One hour lecture per week.

61.203 Leadership Laboratory I (Fall) (0) - This course (to be taken in conjunction with AS 201 and 202) provides you with the opportunity to demonstrate fundamental management skills and prepares you for Field Training.

61.204 Leadership Laboratory II – (Spring) (0) - This course (to be taken in conjunction with AS 201 and 202) provides you with the opportunity to demonstrate fundamental management skills and prepares you for Field Training.

61.240 AFROTC Field Training (4-Weeks) (Summer) (3) - Intensive study of military education, experience in leadership and management at an active duty installation. Also training in marksmanship, survival, and athletics. Prerequisites: AS 101, 102, 201, 202; an interview by Professor of Air and Space Studies and other military requirements.

61.250 AFROTC Field Training (6-Weeks) (Summer) (3) - Intensive study of military education, experience in leadership and management at an active duty installation. Also training in marksmanship, survival, and athletics. Prerequisite: Interview by Professor of Air and Space Studies and other military requirements.

*61.301 Air Force Leadership Studies I (Fall) (3) - General theory and practice of management with special reference to the US Air Force. The course covers the evolution of management, policy formulation, planning principles and practices, organizing, staffing and directing; there is also consideration of social and ethical issues within the management process, as well as an emphasis in practical communication skills. Three hour weekly lecture. Prerequisite: 61.202 or permission of instructor.

*61.302 Air Force Leadership Studies II (Spring) (3) - General theory and practice of management with special reference to the US Air Force. The course covers the evolution of management, policy formulation, planning principles and practices, organizing, staffing and directing; there is also consideration of social and ethical issues within the management process, as well as an emphasis in practical communication skills. Three hour weekly lecture. Prerequisite: 61.301 or permission of instructor.

61.303 Air Force Leadership Laboratory I (Fall) (0) – Application of leadership theory, individually and in groups. The course is designed to accomplish effective mission accomplishment, as well as an emphasis in communications skills development. Three hour weekly lab. Prerequisite: 61.204 or permission of instructor.

61.304 Air Force Leadership Laboratory II (Spring) (0) – Application of leadership theory, individually and in groups. The course is designed to accomplish effective mission accomplishment, as well as an emphasis in communications skills development. Three hour weekly lab. Prerequisite: 61.303 or permission of instructor and the AFROTC approved membership in the Professional Officer Corps.

*61.401 National Security Affairs/Preparation For Active Duty I (Fall) (3) – The role and functions of the professional military officer in a democratic society and civil-military interaction; basic framework of defense policy and formulation of defense strategy; the impact of East Asia, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, and the Commonwealth of Independent States on US National Security Policy and the development of individual communications skills. Three hour weekly lecture. Prerequisite: 61.302 and AFROTC approved membership in the Professional Officer Corps or permission of instructor.

*61.402 National Security Affairs/Preparation for Active Duty II (Spring) (3) – The problems of developing defense strategy in a rapidly changing technological environment; effective deterrent posture and management of conflict; dynamics and agencies of defense policy making. Three hour weekly lecture. Prerequisite: 61.401 or permission of instructor and the AFROTC approved membership in the Professional Officer Corps.

61.403 Air Force Leadership Laboratory I (Fall) (0) – Application of leadership theory, individually and in groups. The course is designed to accomplish effective mission accomplishment, as well as an emphasis in communications skills development. Three hour weekly lab. Prerequisite: 61.304 or permission of instructor and the AFROTC approved membership in the Professional Officer Corps.

61.404 Air Force Leadership Laboratory II (Spring) (0) – Application of leadership theory, individually and in groups. The course is designed to accomplish effective mission accomplishment, as well as an emphasis in communications skills development. Three hour weekly lab. Prerequisite: 61.403 or permission of instructor and the AFROTC approved membership in the Professional Officer Corps.

*Professional officer Course - The Professional officer Course (POC) constitutes a four-semester program, normally taken during the junior and senior years, leading to commissioning as a US Air Force officer. The POC concentrates on concepts and practices of management and leadership, national defense policy, and communicative skills.
