Chinese - CHI (19)

19.101 Chinese I (3) - Basic elements of Mandarin Chinese, with emphasis on spoken language, tonal system, and basic writing. Introduces the Chinese culture. Three hours lecture per week. Requires practice sessions in language lab.

19.102 Chinese II (3) - Continuation of 19.101. Begin study of the Chinese characters. Equal emphasis on "four skill" training. Dictionary use is introduced. Three hours lecture per week. Requires practice sessions in language laboratory. Prerequisite: 19.101 or equivalent.

19.203 Chinese III (3) - Continuation of 19.102. Offers training in reading, writing, speaking and listening at the intermediate level of proficiency, with emphasis on structure and syntax. Exposure to authentic language will significantly increase beyond Chinese II. Exercises are designed to help students communicate in full sentences and paragraphs. Three hours lecture per week. Prerequisite: 19.102 or equivalent.

19.204 Chinese IV (3) - Continuation of 19.203. Offers training in reading, writing, speaking and listening at the advanced level of proficiency, with emphasis on developing fluency in all four skills. Exposure to authentic language will significantly increase beyond Chinese III. Exercises are designed to help students communicate in a variety of formal and informal settings. Three hours lecture per week. Prerequisite: 19.203 or equivalent.

19.211 Foundations of Chinese Civilization (Fall) (3) - Chinese culture and civilization in historical perspective, with emphasis on art and philosophy. Three hours lecture per week. Taught in English. This course is approved as a Diversity General Education Course.

19.212 China Today (Spring) (3) - Chinese culture and civilization today, with focus on art, political philosophy, customs and new directions. Three hours lecture per week. Taught in English. This course is approved as a Diversity General Education Course.

19.218 Silk Road Studies (3) - Chinese culture and environmental studies, including lectures at Peking University, and field trips to Xian, Dunhuang, Kashgar, Beijing, and Shanghai. Three hours lecture per week.

19.350 Foreign Language Teaching Methodology and Research (3) - Covers evolution of methodology, new trends and theories, latest quantitative and qualitative research. Three hours lecture per week. Required for foreign language education majors. Not offered every semester.

19.400 Study Abroad (1-8) - by consent of the chairperson.
