Minor in Child Life Specialist (CLS)

This minor provides students with a comprehensive foundation of course work and practicum experiences related to the growth and development of healthy and hospitalized children and adolescents. These varied experiences provide a solid foundation required to support hospitalized children and their families. Successful completion of the multidisciplinary curriculum qualifies students to apply for a 600-hour child life clinical internship. Upon successful completion of the internship, students qualify to sit for the Child Life Professional Certification Exam. Students must earn at least a C in each course of this minor and must receive advisement from the Department of Teaching and Learning in regard to course selection. Courses marked with an asterisk (*) have prerequisites.

In order to qualify for enrollment in a child life specialist internship, students must complete five courses from the list below (PSYCH 211 and PSYCH 212) and any three of the following (BIO 173, BIO 174, COMSTUD 324, COUNSEL 400/500, COUNSEL 420/520, PHIL 290, PSYCH 210) by earning at least a C. Courses marked with an asterisk (*) have prerequisites.
